Kirkcaldy: Plaster Coving, Cornice and Ceiling Roses

We deliver plaster coving and plaster ceiling roses to Kirkcaldy usually once a week so there is never long to wait after placing an order, we use our own vans and drivers for deliveries to ensure that our coving arrives in good condition, please give us as much notice as possible for deliveries because at busy times of the year the vans fill up quickly. Or drivers will check that cornice is handled carefully and stacked safely ready for use, this is especially important on busy or crowded building sites where space can be short and damage can occur after delivery.

We still make all our plaster coving and ceiling roses by hand, plaster cornice is made is 8 foot (2.4M) lengths, using the same techniques and materials that were used in Victorian times, each one is individually moulded, all our ceiling roses are also individually made by hand. We keep large amounts of finished coving and ceiling roses in stock, allowing us to meet even the largest orders in a matter of days. Please remember when ordering cornice it is sold by the meter, not the length, just enter the number of meters you need and we will do the rest.

Kirkcaldy's history dates back to the thirteenth century, Ravenscraig castle was built by James II in 1460 and was the first castle in Scotland designed to withstand cannon fire. Kirkcaldy remained a fairly small settlement until the nineteenth century when the population expanded rapidly from just over three thousand in 1800 to thirty five thousand one hundred years later. In the nineteenth century Kirkcaldy became the linoleum capital of the world with large factories generating great wealth which funded the construction of many fine public buildings.

Along with the public buildings there was a boom in the building of housing for the ever growing number of workers and managers and professionals that the new industries required. Today this has left a legacy of fine Victorian and Edwardian houses, all of which would originally have had plaster cornice and ceiling roses, also perhaps corbels and panel mouldings. Fortunantly most of this plasterwork has survived however where it has not, it can be replaced relatively easily and we have worked on many such restorations. Several designs have been consistently popular for these Victorian cornice restorations.

Swan neck cornice, so called because it extends further across the ceiling than it does down the wall was used extensively throughout the Victorian and Edwardian eras, it was used in all types of houses, with the larger grander houses with their higher ceilings and bigger rooms having a larger size such as LPC017 and smaller houses with lower ceilings having a smaller version of the same design such as MPC065. Although the name may not ring any bells, the design will be recognisable to anybody familiar with older houses. If you are also looking for a ceiling rose, plain spun rose such as LPR074 is a good match for any Victorian cornice.

For something more ornate, LPC019 is an ornate Victorian cornice that would have been used in the entrance hall and principal rooms of larger houses where it would have had the maximum impact upon guests. LPR060 is an original Victorian ceiling rose that also features acanthus leaves and will complement it perfectly.

We don't just make coving for older properties we have a full range covering all ages and types of house, designs such as LPC015, a stylish cornice not tied to any period, that will add elegance to any room with ceilings of average height and above. MPC046 will have just as much effect and has smaller proportions for those rooms with lower ceilings, or for some 1930s style MPC028 is a classic three step Art Deco cornice.

Samples of all our plaster coving are available off the individual product pages, these pages also feature hundreds of pictures of our coving and ceiling roses in real life settings, all these pictures have been sent in by our customers and are the best way to get an idea of how the different designs could look in your own home. It is always surprising just how different the same ceiling rose or cornice can look depending on the way in which the room has been decorated and furnished. Samples only take a couple of days to arrive.

We would suggest you use experienced fitters to install your plaster coving not only will the finished job be better it should also be cheaper. Experienced tradesmen will not have problems with walls that are not straight, ceilings that are not level or corners that are not right angles. All these things are just normal parts of the job and to be expected especially when working on older houses. We have good links with local tradesmen and can put you in contact if required.

If you have any other questions or would like any further help or advice, please call our customer services team, they have a wealth of experience and are always happy to talk to customers.
