Plaster Coving Large Victorian Modillion 160mm Drop XLPC005
Drop: 160mmProjection: 190mm
The Modillion block design is taken from the buildings of ancient Greece and Rome, it became the height of fashion in the Georgian period, when everybody who was anybody was going to see the newly discovered Ruins of Pompeii.
Originally, extremely expensive to produce. Cornices like this became more widely used in the Victorian period when they could be fabricated offsite and brought to the newly built house in pre-made lengths.
This is a Large Victorian Cornice. You will need a good ceiling height of at least 10 feet for this to look in proportion, we have the same design in a smaller size LPC020 for those who do not have such high ceilings.
This type of cornice would traditionally have been used by the Victorians and the Edwardians in the entrance hall and the principal downstairs rooms of a house.
Modillion block cornices were also elaborately decorated with Acanthus leaves, egg and dart motifs, dentil mouldings, and other elements of classical design. LPC019 is a richly decorated cornice of similar proportions.
A plain spun ceiling rose such as LPR074. will compliment this cornice very well. Or, if you're looking for something more ornate, LPR060 is a richly decorated Victorian ceiling rose, featuring an acanthus leaf design.
We still make all our plaster cornice by hand. A cornice such as this can only be made by hand, there is no other way to capture fine detail and clean lines. Each length is individually moulded using the same techniques and materials that were used in Victorian times.
HOW MUCH SHOULD I ORDER?
If you measure your plaster coving needs and order an exact amount, one wall could end up being finished in small off-cuts. To avoid this, we recommend you order 15% extra to ensure longer lengths are used wherever possible, as this will create a better finish. This coving comes in 2.3m lengths.
Please remember, our coving is priced and ordered by the metre, not per length. Prices include VAT.
