Solihull: Plaster Coving, Cornice and Ceiling Roses
We deliver plaster coving and plaster ceiling roses to the Solihull area at least once a week, so there is never long to wait for your order. We use our own vans and drivers for deliveries to ensure our plaster arrives in good condition, our drivers will also check that coving is handled carefully and stored safely ready to be used, this is especially important on busy or crowded building sites where space can be short and damage can occur after delivery.
We still make all our plaster products by hand using the same materials and techniques that were used in Victorian times, coving is made in 8 foot (2.4M) lengths each one individually cast, our ceiling roses are also individually hand made. We keep large stocks of finished coving so that we can meet even the largest orders in a matter of days rather than weeks.
For centuries Solihull remained a quiet agricultural parish until the railway arrived in 1852 after which wealthy industrialists began moving out from Birmingham to escape the noise and the smoke. Many grand Victorian Villas along with smaller detached and semi detached houses were built in the 1880s and 1890s. In 1900 the population was still under 10,000 having grown from 3,000 a hundred years earlier, now the population is over 200,000 showing the massive expansion that took place in the twentieth century.
Today, Solihull has a mix of fine Victorian and Edwardian houses along with a wealth of twentieth century properties. All of the Victorian and Edwardian houses would have originally had a full set of decorative plaster mouldings, namely cornices, ceiling roses, and possibly panel mouldings and corbels, fortunately most of this has survived though where it has not we have worked on many of the renovations. Always popular on Victorian cornice restorations is the Swan neck profile, so called because it extends further across the ceiling than it does down the wall, it was used extensively during the nineteenth century and through into the Edwardian era, its distinctive design will be instantly recognisable to anybody familiar with older properties.
We have a number of different sizes of swan neck cornice, the Victorians used to use different sizes of essentially the same design depending on the height of the ceiling or size of the room. LPC017 is one of our larger swan neck cornices and suitable for the high ceilings of larger Victorian and Edwardian detached and semi detached houses, for above average and averaged height ceilings LPC030 and MPC065 will fit respectively, MPC065 is also often chosen when a Victorian feel is desired in a more modern property. A plain spun ceiling rose such as LPR074 is a popular choice with any swan neck cornice, if you are looking for something more ornate LPR060 is an original Victorian design featuring acanthus leaves.
We don't just make coving for older properties we have a wide range covering all ages and types of house. LPC015 is a stylish cornice not tied to any particular period, that looks fantastic anywhere with ceilings of average height and above, MPC051 and MPC046 are smaller cornices that are just as stylish and both look great in more modern properties, we also have stepped art deco designs such as MPC028, we think there is something for everyone, if you need any inspiration please call our customer services team who have years of experience between them.
Samples of all our cornice are available off the individual product pages on the website, these pages also feature hundreds of pictures of our coving in real life situations. The vast majority of these photographs have been sent in by our customers and they are the best way to get an impression of how a particular ceiling rose or cornice would actually look in your own home. It is amazing just how different the same ceiling rose can look in two different rooms depending upon the style in which it has been decorated and furnished. Samples only take a couple of days to arrive.
We would suggest you use experienced cornice fitters to install your coving, not only will the finished result be better, it should also be cheaper, they will not have problems with walls that are not straight, ceilings that are not level, not to mention corners that are not right angles. All these things are just expected parts of the job especially when working on older houses where few things are ever straight or level.
We have good contacts with local tradesmen and are happy to put you in contact. If you would like any further information or have any other questions whatsoever please give our customer services team a call they will be happy to talk to you.
