Plaster Coving Georgian Egg and Dart 85mm SPC020
Drop: 85mmProjection: 65mm
In the Georgian period, plaster cornice was very expensive to produce, having to be made onsite, often smaller cornices like this were used to keep the cost down.
The egg and dart motif comes from the buildings of ancient Greece and Rome. It was one of many classical designs that became the height of fashion in Georgian times, continuing to be popular into the Victorian era and beyond.
During the Victorian period, advances in mould making made it possible for cornices such as this to be manufactured off-site and transported, in pre-made lengths to the many newly built houses.
Today we mainly supply this cornice to older properties where it's proportions are in keeping with the age of the house. Or to Victorian and later houses, where, for some reason, there is not enough room for a larger cornice. Often this is because ceilings have been lowered, and there is now insufficient room between the new ceiling height and the window architraves for a larger cornice.
Some people, of course, are just looking for an attractive small cornice, and this is one of the best. If you are looking for a matching ceiling rose, a plain spun rose such as MPR073 is a good choice.
If you're looking for a larger egg and dart cornice, MPC064 and MPC045 are worth looking at, or for something a little more detailed MPC019.
We make all our plaster cornice by hand. Each length is individually moulded using the same techniques and materials that were used in Victorian times. This is the only way to get the crisp detail on a cornice such as this.
HOW MUCH SHOULD I ORDER?
If you measure your plaster coving needs and order an exact amount, one wall could end up being finished in small off-cuts. To avoid this, we recommend you order 15% extra to ensure longer lengths are used wherever possible, as this will create a better finish. This coving comes in 2.1m lengths.
Please remember, our coving is priced and ordered by the metre, not per length. Prices include VAT.
