Newton Abbot: Plaster Coving, Cornice and Ceiling Roses

We deliver plaster cornice and plaster ceiling roses to Newton Abbot and throughout Devon usually once a week, we use our own vans and drivers for deliveries as our products are fragile and no delivery companies can deliver them safely or at anything like a reasonable cost. Our drivers will check that coving is handled carefully and that it is stacked safely ready for use. This is important on busy building sites where space can be short and damage can occur after delivery.

All our plaster coving and ceiling roses are made by hand using the same techniques and materials that were used in Victorian times, cornice is cast in 8 foot (2.4M) lengths each one individually made and all our ceiling roses are also individually made by hand. We keep large stocks of finished coving and ceiling roses so that we are able to meet even the biggest orders in a matter of days. Please remember if you decide to place an order that coving is sold by the meter not by the length, just enter the number of meters you require and we will do the rest, thank you.

Newton Abbot grew massively in the nineteenth century, expanding from a population of just over one thousand in 1800 to over twelve thousand in 1900. The railway arrived in 1846 turning it into a major junction with locomotive repair works which along with the railway, employed thousands of people. This period has left a wealth of fine Victorian properties of all types and sizes, all of which would have originally have had decorative plaster cornice and ceiling roses. Fortunately most of these original features have survived, however where they have not we have worked on many of the renovations. Probably the most popular design for these Victorian and Edwardian cornice restorations is the swan neck profile, so called because it extends further across the ceiling than it does down the wall. Its distinctive shape will be instantly recognisable to anybody familiar with older houses.

Swan neck coving was used widely in the Victorian and Edwardian periods across all types of property, with larger more detailed versions being used in larger rooms with higher ceilings. LPC073 is one of our larger swan neck cornices suitable for the high ceilings of Victorian detached and larger semi detached houses. MPC065 is a smaller size suited to ceilings of average height which is also often chosen for more modern houses where customers want to create a period atmosphere. LPC030 will do everything in between. If you also need a ceiling rose, a plain spun ceiling rose such as LPR074 will go very well with any Victorian or swan neck cornice or for something more ornate LPR060 is a fine Victorian ceiling rose featuring an acanthus leaf design.

We don't just make cornice for older houses we have a full range of styles and designs for all types and ages of property. Designs such as LPC015 which although not tied to any particular period or style will add a touch of elegance to any room that has ceilings of average height and above. MPC046 will have just as much effect for those with lower ceiling heights. Samples of all our coving are available off the individual product pages, where you will also find hundreds of photographs of our coving and ceiling roses in real life situations. All the pictures have been sent in by our customers and are a great place to get inspiration and to see how a particular cornice or ceiling rose would actually look in your own home. It is always surprising just how different the same plaster cornice can look in different rooms depending upon the style in which they have been decorated and furnished. Samples only take a couple of days to arrive.

We would suggest you use experienced cornice fitters to install your coving, not only will the end result be better it should also be cheaper, they will not have difficulties with bay windows, ceilings that are not level, walls that are not straight, not to mention mitres that are not right angles or coving with a pattern on it. Very few older houses have walls that are straight or ceilings that are perfectly level, these are all things that are expected parts of the job. We have good links with local tradesmen and can put you in contact if required.

If you have any other questions or would like any further information or advice, please give our customer services team a call, they have years of experience between them and are always happy to talk to customers.
