Grimsby: Plaster Coving, Cornice and Ceiling Roses
We deliver plaster coving and plaster ceiling roses to Grimsby and the surrounding area once a week usually, so there is never long to wait after placing an order. We use our own vans and drivers to make deliveries as plaster cornice is fragile, and there are no delivery companies who can deliver it in good condition at anything like a reasonable price. Please give us as much notice as possible for orders, as the vans do get full. Our drivers will check that coving is handled carefully and stacked safely ready to be used, this is especially important on busy or crowded building sites where damage can occur after delivery.
We make all our plaster coving by hand using the same materials and techniques that were used in Victorian times, plaster coving is made in 8 foot (2.4M) lengths, each length is individually hand made, all our ceiling roses are also individually made by hand. We keep large stocks of finished coving and ceiling roses allowing us to meet even the largest orders in a couple of days.
Grimsby grew from a population of under two thousand in 1801 to a population of over sixty thousand in 1900 and by the beginning of the first world war it was the world's largest fishing port. This explosive growth in the Victorian period led to the building of huge amounts of new housing to accommodate the ever growing population, ranging from workers' terraces to grand villas for the factory and trawler owners.
All of these Victorian houses would have originally had decorative plaster mouldings, the higher status the house the more ornate the mouldings would have been, but they would all of had some. Fortunately most of these Victorian mouldings have survived, though where they have not, they can be easily and authentically replaced, we have worked on many of these renovations.
Always popular for these Victorian cornice restorations is the swan neck profile, so called because it extends further across the ceiling than it does down the wall. Swan neck cornice was used extensively, throughout the Victorian and Edwardian periods, whilst the name may be unfamiliar its distinctive shape will be recognisable to anybody who likes older houses.
Swan neck cornice was used in all types and sizes of Victorian house, with smaller sizes of essentially the same design being used in houses where ceilings were lower such as terraces and larger sizes being used in the bigger rooms with higher ceilings of Victorian detached and semi detached houses.
We have a range of different sizes of Swan neck cornice, LPC017 being one of the larger and suitable for rooms with well above average ceiling heights, LPC030 and MPC065 are suitable for those with above average and average ceiling heights respectively. A plain spun ceiling rose such as LPR074 will complement any Victorian cornice or for something more ornate LPR060 is a fine Victorian design featuring acanthus leaves.
We don't just make plaster coving for older houses, we have a full range of styles suitable for all ages and types of property. LPC015 is a stylish cornice that looks good anywhere with average and above ceiling heights, it is not tied to any particular period and will add elegance to any room. MPC046 is just as stylish though in a smaller size for those with lower ceilings.
Samples of all our coving are available off the individual product pages, these pages also show hundreds of pictures of our coving and ceiling roses in real life settings, all of these photographs have been sent in by our customers and are the best way to see how a particular ceiling rose or plaster cornice would actually look in your own home.
It is surprising how the same cornice or ceiling rose can look so different depending on the style in which a room has been decorated and furnished. Samples only take a couple of days to arrive, if you do decide to place an order please note we sell coving by the meter, please enter the amount of meters you need NOT the amount of lengths, thank you.
We would suggest you use experienced fitters to install your coving, not only will the end result be better it should also be cheaper, experienced fitters will not have any problems with ceilings that are not level or walls that are not straight, not to mention mitres that are not right angles or matching a pattern. All these things are just normal parts of the job, especially when working on older houses where few things are ever level or straight. We have good contacts with local tradesmen and can put you in contact if required.
If you have any other questions or would like any other help or advice, please give our customer services team a call, they have years of experience between them and are always happy to talk to customers.
