Glasgow: Plaster Coving, Cornice and Ceiling Roses

We deliver plaster coving and plaster ceiling roses to the Glasgow area at least once a week, so there is never long to wait after placing an order. We use our own vans and drivers for delivery to make sure our products arrive in good condition, our drivers will check that coving is handled carefully and stacked safely ready to be used, this is especially important on busy or crowded building sites where damage can occur.

We still make all our plaster cornice and ceiling roses by hand using the same materials processes and techniques that were used in Victorian times, we make plaster coving in 8 foot (2.4M) lengths each one individually cast, all our plaster ceiling roses are also individually made by hand. We keep large stocks of finished plaster coving and ceiling roses, to enable us to meet even the largest orders in a couple of days.

In the eighteenth century Glasgow grew rich off the tobacco trade, which funded many of the city’s fine public buildings. In the nineteenth century Glasgow boomed during the industrial revolution becoming a global center for ship building, marine engineering, locomotive and railway engineering, with the cotton industry also employing a third of the city's population at its height. The population of Glasgow grew tenfold from 77,000 in 1801 to 760,000 in 1901. Huge amounts of new housing was built in the Victorian period to house this ever growing population, with many grand Victorian town houses and villas along with fine stone Victorian tenement blocks.

All of Glasgow's Victorian houses would have originally have had plaster cornice and ceiling roses and in many cases other decorative plaster mouldings such as corbels and panel mouldings, there would also have been matching timber skirting boards and architraves.

Fortunately most of this original Victorian plasterwork has survived, and where it has not we have worked on many of the restorations. Always popular for Victorian cornice restoration is swan neck cornice so called because it extends further across the ceiling than it does down the wall, it is a style that was used throughout the nineteenth century with larger houses simply having larger versions of essentially the same design. LPC017 is one of our larger swan neck cornices suitable for the high ceilings of larger detached and semi detached Victorian houses.

LPC030 is for above average height ceilings and MPC065 for ceilings of average height, perhaps in upstairs bedrooms or for giving a Victorian feel to a more modern house.

A plain spun ceiling rose such as LPR074 will go very well with any Victorian cornice or if you would like something more ornate LPR060 is an original Victorian design featuring acanthus leaves.

We also have a small range of Victorian skirting boards and architraves, these are of a size and quality of timber that is hard to find these days, SB009 and ARC002 are a Victorian skirting board and architrave with the proportions to match one of our larger cornices.

We don't just make plaster coving and ceiling roses for older houses, we have a full range of designs covering all ages and types of house. Plaster cornices like LPC015 a stylish design not tied to any particular period which will look good anywhere with average and above ceiling heights, MPC046 will add just as much charm if you have lower ceilings, and art deco designs such as MPC028 for that unmistakable art deco style.

Samples of all our cornices are available off the individual product pages on the website, these pages also feature many pictures sent in by our customers showing our ceiling roses and cornice in real life situations, these are by far the best way to get an impression of how a particular cornice would look in your own home. It is amazing just how different the same coving or ceiling rose can look in two different rooms depending on how they have been decorated and furnished. Samples only take a couple of days to arrive.

We would suggest you use experienced fitters to install your coving, not only will the end result be better it should also be cheaper. Things like, walls that are not straight or ceilings that are not level not to mention cornice with a pattern that needs matching on a corner will not cause them any problems, all of these things are to be expected and are just part of the job especially when working on older house where few things are level or straight.

We have good contacts with local tradesmen and can put you in touch if required. If there is anything else you would like to know, please give our customer services team a call, they are always happy to talk to you.

What a fantastic accomplishment for this first-time homeowner in Glasgow. The pictures above showcase an impressive and regal bathroom transformation in their Victorian Sandstone terrace.

Seeking a traditional yet luxurious finish, this customer chose to install our Large Swan Neck Plaster Coving LPC030, which has flawlessly framed the space. Iconic for its sleek curve shape, Swan Neck Coving became a staple in Victorian homes during the Queen's reign. It's the perfect choice to nod to a traditional era but also versatile enough to work in various interiors, ensuring that installation provides longevity and value.
