Background
When Beth and her partner moved into their Victorian terrace, they saw it as a blank canvas with huge potential. Determined to bring back its historic charm, they began restoring original features—fireplaces, coving, and intricate details like coving. These finishing touches helped create a seamless, polished look throughout the home.
We spoke to Beth (@bethsbudgetdiary) about her renovation process, the importance of period details, and her experience working with Plaster Ceiling Roses.
Can you describe the style and period of your property?
It’s a two-bedroom Victorian terrace, built around the 1880s.
The Challenge:
Our biggest challenge was that the ceilings and walls weren’t totally straight. On top of that, our mitre box was too small for the coving we’d chosen. So we built our own mitre box and cut smaller lengths to follow the ceiling’s curves. There was also a lot of polyfilla involved!
What made you choose our products?
After a lot of research online and on Instagram, PCR kept popping up. It seemed like the go-to place for high-quality coving, and we thought the prices were really reasonable too. The coving has elevated each room and fits the style of the house perfectly.
We loved the range of intricate coving options. Since we were aiming to stay true to the Victorian look, the Victorian Swan Neck coving was the perfect choice.
Before & After:
Before the coving, the rooms felt plain and modern—at odds with the heritage of the house. Now, with detailed Victorian Swan Neck cornices and stop ends neatly capping the lengths, each room feels considered and complete. The addition of stop ends provides a tidy finish where the coving ends at walls, giving the impression of custom joinery and true craftsmanship.
Beth and her partner also installed a Plain Acanthus Ceiling Rose in one of the rooms to highlight a central pendant light, tying the room’s features together beautifully.
Products Used:
Victorian Swan Neck Cornice (LPC030) – A traditional profile that complements the home’s 1880s architecture.
Plaster Ceiling Rose – Plain Acanthus 610mm Dia (MPR061) – A classic rose that adds elegance to the ceiling and draws attention to the light fixture.
Final Thoughts:
Beth’s experience shows how the addition of coving with finessed ‘stop ends’ can have a big impact. These finishing details help coving integrate more naturally into awkward spaces, especially in period homes where nothing is perfectly square. With help from Plaster Ceiling Roses, Beth has created a home that respects its heritage while feeling fresh, refined, and beautifully put together.
