Thornton Heath, Surrey, has numerous period houses, particularly Victorian and Edwardian properties. These abodes often feature architectural details like high ceilings, fireplaces, and ornate moldings.
Background:
When decorating his flat, in a large Edwardian house, Mirko aimed to enhance its character with traditional plaster coving. He wanted to reintroduce period-style details while ensuring the designs suited the proportions of his room. After careful consideration, he chose ‘Plaster Ceiling Roses’ for their high-quality products and extensive range of styles & sizes.
The Challenge:
One of the key challenges Mirko faced was selecting the right coving for his ceiling height. The bedroom, with its lower ceiling, needed a subtle (shorter) Swan Neck design to maintain a sense of proportion.
Another challenge was ensuring a smooth and professional installation, given the inevitable quirks of working with period properties. ‘Plaster Ceiling Roses’ don’t offer a coving installation service - however we do have a database of skilled coving installers, who can provide an expert reasonably priced coving fitting service throughout the UK. We connected ‘CM Cornice’ with Mirko.
The Project Plan:
To bring his vision to life, Mirko partnered with PCR for the supply of high-quality plaster cornices and enlisted the expert team at CM Cornice Ltd for the installation.
For the bedroom, where ceiling height was a consideration, he opted for the Small Victorian Swan Neck Cornice (SPC070) - a refined, curved profile that created a seamless transition between the walls and ceiling.
SPC070 is especially suitable for modern houses with their lower ceilings, and older properties where there is not the space required for a larger plaster cornice above the windows, usually because at some point the ceilings have been lowered.
The professional installers at CM Cornice Ltd meticulously fitted the coving, ensuring it aligned perfectly with the existing architecture and handled any installation challenges with expertise.
Before & After:
Before the renovation, the bedroom lacked the period detailing that Mirko wanted to bring back into the property. The addition of carefully chosen plaster coving has completely transformed the space, adding elegance and architectural interest. In the bedroom, the Swan Neck cornice provides a refined, timeless touch.
Mirko describes the final result as “absolutely amazing”, noting that the coving feels as though it has always been part of the property.
