Restoring Edwardian charm in Kent with Plaster Ceiling Roses & Coving

Location:

Maidstone, Kent, is a town rich in history, with its roots stretching back to Roman times. The influence of this heritage is still visible today, from ancient roads that define the town’s layout to the period architecture that graces its streets. Among these, Victorian and Edwardian homes stand out for their character and craftsmanship, making them a joy to restore.

Isobel Bannister (@renovation_no55) recently embarked on a restoration project in Maidstone, carefully selecting coving and ceiling roses to enhance the period charm of her Edwardian property.

Background:

When Isobel purchased her Edwardian home in December 2021, it was in need of extensive renovation. From outdated wiring and plumbing issues to years of neglect, the house required a thoughtful approach to bring it back to life.

“My home was in a terrible state when I bought it - there were major structural and aesthetic challenges to tackle, all on a tight budget. I knew I had to be strategic with my restoration choices,” she explains.

Determined to preserve the home’s heritage, Isobel focused on reinstating lost period features. Coving and ceiling roses became a key part of this vision, helping to reintroduce the elegance and detail that define Edwardian interiors.

The Challenge:

Blending traditional and modern design. Isobel’s approach was to strike a balance between historical authenticity and contemporary style.

“I love the contrast between old and new - there’s something captivating about pairing a classic ceiling rose with a striking modern light fixture. It creates a look that feels both timeless and fresh,” she says.

To complement the proportions of her home, Isobel selected a Plain Acanthus Ceiling Rose (MPR061) alongside an Ornate Victorian Plaster Ceiling Rose (MPR062). For the coving, she opted for a delicate Dentil Plaster Cornice (SPC015) with a 75mm drop, ensuring the detailing remained in harmony with the scale of each room.

The Project Plan:

To further enhance these architectural details, Isobel painted the ceiling, coving, and ceiling roses in a soft pink. This subtle yet sophisticated choice added warmth while drawing attention to the intricate craftsmanship of the plasterwork.

Before & After:

The transformation has been remarkable. “Adding coving and ceiling roses has completely changed the feel of my home,” Isobel reflects. “Walking into a room without them now feels unfinished. These details don’t just enhance the aesthetics - they bring back a sense of history and craftsmanship that’s hard to replicate.”

Her thoughtful design choices have successfully restored the home’s Edwardian charm while creating a space that feels both classic and contemporary.
