Restoring Character in a 1930s Cambridge Home – Neha’s Ceiling Rose Project

Restoring Character in a 1930s Cambridge Home – Neha’s Ceiling Rose Project

Location:

Cambridge, UK

Background:

Neha and her family recently moved into a 1930s 4 Bed House in Cambridge. While the property had charm, it also bore the imprint of a dated 1960s interior. Their goal was to modernise the space while preserving the classic features typical of homes in the area. Keen to reintroduce original character without overwhelming the rooms, they began incorporating ceiling roses and coving as part of a careful restoration.

Can you describe the style and period of your property?

It is a 1930s Cambridgeshire home with traditional features and a very beautiful garden. It was done up in traditional quaint British style by the previous owner and we wanted to keep some of that vintage look and feel while renovating the place.

The Challenge:

Where do we start – we had a few challenges in terms of finding suitable tradespeople who understood our vision and were willing to work with us to help us achieve the end result we wanted. We had to get some essential work done as well on a property that is a 100 years old which was something we expected to do, but finding issues along the way was not always welcome. We are restoring the floor back to the original pine floor and we had to talk to a lot of people before finding a couple of people who we felt were the right people to repair the floor and restore it for us.

The Project Plan:

As part of a meticulous restoration, Neha started adding coving and ceiling roses to bring back the original character without overpowering the spaces.

Finding a suitable installer that was confident with ceiling roses and coving was also not easy as most of the normal plasterers we talked to were not experienced fibre hands, we eventually found a really good company in Cambridge that were experienced with installing gypsum ceiling roses / coving, and they did a really good job for us!

What made you choose our products?

We chose Plaster Ceiling Roses products instead of other suppliers as we wanted to get the textured look and feel of gypsum plaster roses for our home. The ceilings were pretty plain and bare when we bought the place, and adding ceiling roses to certain rooms and areas has added a beautiful focus point in each room which paired with our lighting fixtures will give a us the look we have been striving for. Adding the ceiling roses helps break up the monotony of a large ceiling in a room with no features.

Before & After:

We liked the simplistic and classic features of the roses which matches our view for a minimal look for the rooms where we wanted these roses to be installed. The light fixture pairings with these roses will accentuate the minimalism that is key for us in our finished look for the rooms.

Products Used:

• Plain Spun Plaster Ceiling Rose 520mm (MPR072)

• Plain Spun Plaster Ceiling Rose 420mm (MPR071)

• Classic Plaster Coving 90mm Drop (MPC046)

Final Thoughts:

Neha’s project is a thoughtful example of how to blend modern updates with historical elements. Through small but purposeful details like coving and ceiling roses, the family is reviving the soul of their 1930s home without overcomplicating it. It’s a work in progress, but every addition is made with care—and it shows.
