Location:
Greater Manchester
Background:
In Greater Manchester, Paul’s 1930s semi-detached bathroom was due for a redesign.
Beautiful green onyx porcelain tiles were chosen for the walls with large round LED mirrors, underfloor heating was installed and brass fixtures ordered... the ceiling just needed a finishing touch. A suitable ceiling rose was needed to match the swan neck cornice (SPC070).
Paul’s aim was to find a ceiling rose that would add charm and character to his bathroom. He wanted to pair this with an ultra-modern light fixture for stunning effect.
Can you describe the style and period of your property?
It’s a 1930s pre war semi-detached.
The Challenge:
The bathroom is quite compact so I had to be careful with proportions. I didn’t want a ceiling rose that felt too domineering and the ceiling was slightly wonky!
I am absolutely hopeless at household DIY so PCR found an installer for me. Mark, from G J Draper & Sons was happy to give me a prompt quote and completed the task of the rose installation.
What made you choose our products?
I liked that plaster ceiling roses come in such a wide range of styles from different periods and they’re very affordable (I really wanted a plaster rose - not polystyrene). They also deliver across most of the UK. Their website was user friendly and made it really simple to narrow down the best design for my bathroom.
I wanted something clean, elegant and timeless to match the swan neck profile which I had already chosen. The ‘Plain Spun Plaster Ceiling Rose’ with a diameter 520MM was the perfect solution for my space.
I would highly recommend fitting coving and a ceiling rose, my bathroom feels more luxurious now, and in my opinion a room doesn’t look finished without it.
Before & After:
My original bathroom felt functional but boring. Now the space has a much stronger identity with green tiled walls, antique brass finishes, and crisp white plaster details with a bespoke porcelain counter top that lifts the room without crowding it. The coving and ceiling rose add structure to frame the space.
I think lighting can make a bathroom’s atmosphere. The secret lies in strategic layering - I chose two large LED mirrors with touch sensors, de-mister pads and masculine leather straps. When illuminated these also enhance the detail in my coving and rose.
The pendant light is from inspyer lighting, and has a Ip44 rating - this is crucial for bathrooms. The model name is ‘House of Brass Opal Disk Ceiling Light’, conveniently you can adjust the length of the light’s drop (it was so easy!)
I think I chose well... an elegant ceiling rose paired with a large contemporary pendant light fitting.
Plaster Products Used:
• Plain Spun Plaster Ceiling Rose 520MM Diameter 520MM (MPR072)
• Small Victorian Swan Neck Cornice Drop 80mm (SPC070)
Final Thoughts:
This project is a great example of how even small rooms can benefit from the addition of coving and ceiling roses. Paul added a rose that balances well with the bolder modern finishes. With the right proportions and an experienced installer, even older properties with uneven walls and ceilings can be revived.
