The Project: Add Victorian details with a classic plaster ceiling rose that quietly commands attention

The customer has had an inspiring journey transforming their second bedroom into a thoughtful and colourful Victorian-inspired interior. As well as approaching the project with Victorian design principles, the customer has perfectly finished the space off by installing our Plain Acanthus Plaster Ceiling Rose MPR061. Not only has it added value, but it serves as a perfect focal point that will definitely impress guests.

The choice of layering and use of patterns is staple in Victorian-inspired interiors. The colour green also symbolises growth and the natural world, which was a fascination during the Victorian era.

The Insider's View:

What was the biggest challenge in choosing a style, and how did you overcome it?

“I struggled with what direction to take this room, but knew I wanted to give it an Arts and Crafts/Chintz theme. When picking a ceiling rose, I wanted a style that complements the theme. I was torn between a couple of styles and actually referred back to Plaster Ceiling Rose’s Instagram page for inspo. We landed on the MPR061. I selected a similar size to the main bedroom for consistency.”

Choosing a chintz theme is an excellent design approach when aiming to capture a Victorian essence with a modern twist. Layered patterns, floral artworks, and rich, heavy fabrics help create a thoughtful and expressive interior—qualities that were characteristic of the Victorian era.

How well do the plaster mouldings integrate with the rest of your interior?

“Really well, I have made sure I have kept to classic Victorian styles to keep thedesign style cohesive throughout the house. This includes buying small and large versions of the same style roses for different areas of the house.”

Our MPC061 is a popular choice for those wanting a classic, ornate finish that's versatile and balanced. This rose can be paired with our SPR006 for a consistent finish throughout your home; it’s ideal for smaller rooms such as en-suites or landings.

Did coving help with the proportions or architectural balance of the room?

“I feel it created a lot more depth to the layout of the house and enhanced the room decor more. We did actually decorate the living room before adding the coving and realised how flat and new build the room felt without this! Once we added this and the ceiling rose to the room, it felt finished, and everything came together.”

Adding coving is the perfect way to frame all your design choices and achieve a higher quality finish.

What inspired your design choices—period homes, Pinterest, magazines?

“I spend most my evenings on Pinterest and Instagram looking for decor ideas and inspo. I have always flicked through Period Homes magazines and Homes and Gardens magazines so it was programmed in to create a period looking property!”

Did you paint the coving/roses, and how did the plaster take the finish?

‘Yes, we gave the ceiling rose a lick of paint to finish it upon installation. This glided on lovely with a seamless blend when finished. No paint drips or blobs!’

To get the best finish, we recommend using water-based emulsion paint. Emulsion takes to our products smoothly and dries quickly. Eggshell is slightly easier to clean, whereas a matt finish will help hide tiny imperfections.

Our Plain Acanthus Plaster Ceiling Rose MPR061 is best paired with a light fixture with a base diameter between 100mm and 120mm ensuring a perfect fit and finished look.

We think the customer has done an inspiring job and clearly demonstrated that a space can feel both clean yet thoughtful, it's wonderful to see a modern interior stand out with some Victorian elements. Thoughtful choices and architectural details effortlessly turn a house into a home.
