Louise's 1930s Hallway Makeover: The Complete Story
They say the right light can change everything, and that couldn’t be truer for Louise, whose hallway in Bolton now features a standout mix of style and quirky character.
After scrolling through countless fittings, she came across the oversized grape chandelier from Rockett St George (available via Next) and instantly knew it was the one. With its bold glass grapes and brass leaves, it brought a touch of fun and elegance to her 1930s hallway and, fittingly, it reflects her well-known love of a glass of wine.
As Louise explains, even the most striking light fitting needs the right backdrop. That’s where Plaster Ceiling Roses came in. She chose the Small Acanthus Rings Ceiling Rose (SPR006), a detailed plaster design that complements the chandelier perfectly while fitting the proportions of her narrow hallway. Made from solid gypsum plaster, it feels authentic and completes the look with real substance.

“I wanted something small but full of character,” Louise said. “Most of the ceiling roses I found elsewhere were too plain, but the Acanthus design had just the right amount of detail (vine leaves were perfect), and it suited my 1930s home perfectly.”
Even with the chandelier’s enormous delivery box that barely fit in the car, the project went smoothly. With the help of Plaster Ceiling Roses’ how-to guides and videos, Louise and her husband installed the rose themselves.
“I watched one of their videos and read a few of their blogs,” she said. “It was a lot easier than I expected, and I felt confident doing it myself.”
This small update completely lifted the space, turning the hallway into a feature area that catches the eye as soon as you walk in. The combination of the chandelier and ceiling rose shows how one simple change can transform the feel of a home.
A light worth raising a glass to.

A Closer Look at Louise’s Journey
What inspired your home renovation project, and what vision did you have in mind for the space?
I’ve been a huge fan of Rockett St George for a while and have always loved unique home décor. I’m really inspired by the fun, quirky homes I see on Pinterest (the ones with real character). So when I spotted this grape light fixture, I instantly pictured it in my hallway. I knew it needed a ceiling rose to complete the look and give it that extra wow factor it truly deserves.

Can you describe the style and period of your property?
My home is a 1930s pre-war semi-detached. I would say there’s lots of character to my home, including fireplaces, oak flooring, coving and ceiling roses.
Were there any particular challenges you faced during the renovation process, and how did you overcome them?
My hallway is rather narrow, so originally I was concerned about finding a ceiling rose that would fit the space and be in proportion. Luckily, Plaster Ceiling Roses has a section dedicated to small ceiling roses, which made it extremely easy to find the perfect one.
What made you choose Plaster Ceiling Roses for your property, and how have our products enhanced the overall look?
I chose a ceiling rose from Plaster Ceiling Roses after reading so many great reviews, they came across as really trustworthy. I also loved how easy the website was to navigate. I was looking for a small ceiling rose with some character to suit my 1930s home. Most of the ones I found elsewhere were too plain, but when I came across the Acanthus vine leaf design, it was perfect, the right size with beautiful detailing that really stood out to me.
As the ceiling rose and grape light fixture are the first things you see when you enter my home, I get lots of compliments. It’s definitely different from other people’s hallways, and having a plaster ceiling rose has made my home feel more luxurious.
Who installed your rose / coving?
Me and my husband installed it! It was actually a lot easier than I expected. I got my supplies from the Plaster Ceiling Roses website and then watched one of their videos and read one of their blogs, they were extremely handy. I’m not usually a DIY person, but I felt confident when drilling the holes for the screws (it was easy) and using the adhesive that PCR sells.
