Hannah in Liverpool Installs Victorian Coving with a Modern Twist

Location:

Liverpool, Merseyside

Background:

Hannah owns a Victorian property. The house and coachhouse were built in the 1840s and they’ve tried to maintain the Victorian era but with a modern twist.

Hannah knew she wanted to develop the coachhouse when she bought the property but the main house was priority. She was able to take her time planning the coachhouse and knew she wanted an office in there. In terms of vision for her office, she wanted it traditional to match the house.

From the outset, she was passionate about staying true to the home’s heritage while incorporating a fresh, modern aesthetic.

The Challenge:

Restoring a period property always comes with surprises. For Hannah, the biggest challenges included structural repairs like underpinning and unanticipated flooding. On top of that, the original coving in the house was too damaged to salvage — meaning she needed to find a high-quality replacement that would look convincingly authentic.

The Project Plan:

Once structural work was complete, Hannah focused on design. She embraced colour drenching which was not only across the ceiling but also extending partway down the walls and over the coving, creating an impressive, enveloping effect. This modern take on traditional detailing adds drama and luxury while maintaining the home’s historical character.

Before & After:

The property was badly damaged when we bought it and we couldn’t retain the original coving so we decided to replace it with coving from ‘Plaster Ceiling Roses’ and we haven’t looked back. Everybody always comments on it when they visit assuming it’s original. They are really surprised when we tell them it’s new and it’s also brilliant value for money!

Making Confident Choices with Coving Samples

We ordered several samples (I was very pleased to get a decent sized chunk, rather than a tiny slither), we absolutely loved the one we went for as it was very detailed and I knew I wanted to paint it in a dark colour to look dramatic.

Plaster Product Used:

Final Thoughts:

As we’ve progressed with the renovation things have gotten a little easier and now we’re up to the exciting part which is the decorating and finishings. After renovating the house I think we realised nothing is straight forward especially when it comes to older properties but we wouldn’t change our family home and we adore our Victorian coving!
