Location: Liverpool, North West.
Background
Nicole recently bought her first home, a 1930s semi in Liverpool, and has been renovating it room by room since moving in in 2023. The bathroom became a priority this year, as it felt dated and very simple. She set out to redesign the space with a clearer layout, better flow, and details that matched the period of the house while still feeling modern.

A Closer Look at Nicole’s Journey
What inspired your home renovation project, and what vision did you have in mind for the space?
Nicola has recently purchased her first home in Liverpool which is a pre war 1930s semi and desired to transform her bathroom as previously, it was rather simple and dated. When inspiring to renovate her bathroom, she curated a vision board (shown on her insta highlights) and wished to add coving, tiles and gold fixtures to really give her bathroom some character and a needed upgrade.
“Since moving in during 2023, we’ve been renovating the entire property with the aim of restoring its original character and traditional features, while still incorporating modern comfort. This year, I was especially focused on completing the bathroom.”
“The original space felt cold and poorly planned, so my goal was to create a layout that felt more refined, more spacious, and more in harmony with the rest of the home’s style.”

What made you choose Plaster Ceiling Roses for your property, and how have our products enhanced the overall look?
“Having used plaster ceiling roses & coving in all the other rooms, I knew immediately that coving would be an essential element in the bathroom design. Coving has a powerful visual impact, quietly transforming the atmosphere of a space. It provides a smooth, elegant transition between the wall and ceiling, instantly adding a sense of heritage, craftsmanship, and architectural character to the room.”
On our website, we have many styles of coving that are perfect for bathrooms, you can find these by searching coving by room> bathroom coving. Where we have selected over thirty designs of coving ranging from swan neck, a classic, to egg and dart, that we believe would be a perfect fit for bathrooms.
On each coving profile page we have many helpful and inspiring images of said coving in different rooms, this is extremely beneficial when visualising what each profile would look like in your home.

Can you describe the style and period of your property?
“The property is a 1930s interwar semi-detached house, built in solid brick. It retains the characteristic form, proportions, and charm of that period, while incorporating later updates that remain sympathetic to the original style.”

Are there any particular challenges you’re facing during the renovation process, and how are you overcoming them?
“One of the main challenges during the renovation was the lower ceiling height in the bathroom, which measures 2400mm compared to 2600mm in the other rooms. I knew that any coving or ceiling details would need to be carefully scaled to suit the space.”
If you are struggling with a similar issue like Nicole (lower ceilings than average), our coving is available in many sizes; small to large, it’s important you select a coving that has a drop that looks in proportion to your room. Prior to selecting your coving, we highly recommend ordering some samples where you can have a good look at how the coving will fit in proportion to you wall and room and make sure that it looks proportionally correct. MPC012 is ideal for a ceiling height of 2400mm.

“Initially, the plan was to remove the plastic ceiling planks and increase the headroom before installing moisture-resistant plasterboard. However, once the ceiling was stripped, we discovered it was covering a roof support truss that would have been exposed if the ceiling were raised. As a result, we had to work within the existing height while still achieving a refined, well-proportioned design.”

What made you choose our coving?
“I was drawn to the Victorian-style coving for its intricate, classical-inspired motifs. The pattern is more detailed than others I’ve used before, creating a layered effect with added depth. From a scale perspective, this product was the perfect choice, complementing the Zellige tiling on the shower walls and bringing a subtle sense of heritage.”

Nicole went with one of our popular Victorian designs, Plaster Coving Ornate Victorian 80mm Drop MPC012. This is perfect for rooms with lower ceilings as it is has an 80mm drop.
This design has many intricate details making it a stand out piece/ detail in her bathroom. Adding little details like coving and the gold taps are such ideal perfect finishes to any bathroom and are what makes your bathroom standout from others.

Who installed your coving?
“The coving was installed by Fibrous Moulding Services. Steve, a recommended installer, has previously worked on coving in five other rooms of the house, and I wouldn’t hesitate to use him again. His attention to detail and care during installation is incredible. For this project, he meticulously measured the room to ensure perfectly mirrored cornices at each corner - a particularly challenging task since the room isn’t perfectly square.”
If you are trying to find an installer, feel free to reach out to us and we should put you in contact with one of our recommended independent installers to help you with your project.
