This type of plaster cornice recreates the carved stone cornices of the temples of ancient Greece and Rome. When Palladium architecture and classical architectural features became the height of fashion in the Georgian period, a cornice such as this was the preserve of only the very wealthy.
In Victorian times, the introduction of flexible materials from which cornice moulds could be made allowed this type of cornice to be made off-site and supplied in lengths to builders. They were now within the price range of Victorian detached and semi-detached houses, and even some larger terraces.
Typically, a cornice such as this would be used in an entrance hall, where it would have the maximum impact upon visitors, with cheaper, less decorative cornices used in the rest of the house.
Today we are no longer bound by the norms of Victorian interior design, and this cornice is hugely popular with customers wishing to create their own style throughout the house.
With a drop of 90mm (just under four inches), this cornice is suitable for average and below average ceiling heights. We also make two larger sizes, LPC019 and LPC024, which are suitable for high and above- average ceiling heights, respectively.
Each piece of this plaster cornice is made by hand, using the same techniques and materials that were used in Victorian times.
HOW MUCH SHOULD I ORDER?
If you measure your plaster coving needs and order an exact amount, one wall could end up being finished in small off-cuts. To avoid this, we recommend you order 15% extra to ensure longer lengths are used wherever possible, as this will create a better finish. This coving comes in 2.2m lengths.
