Whitby: Plaster Coving, Cornice and Ceiling Roses
We deliver plaster cornice and plaster ceiling roses to Whitby and the surrounding area usually once a week so there is never long to wait after placing an order. We use our own vans and drivers for our deliveries to ensure all our products arrive in good condition. Plaster coving is fragile and needs to be handled carefully, our drivers will check it is handled correctly and stacked safely ready for use, this is important on busy or cramped building sites where space can be short and damage can occur after delivery.
We still make all our plaster coving and ceiling roses by hand, using the same techniques and materials that were used in Victorian times. Coving is made in 8 foot (2.4M) lengths each piece individually moulded. We keep large stocks of finished cornice and ceiling roses so that we are able to meet even the largest orders in only a few days. Please note when ordering cornice off the website, the price is in meters and you enter the number of meters required, not the number of lengths.
St Hild founded a monastery in what became Whitby in 664 and the current abbey ruins date from the thirteenth century. By the early nineteenth century Whitby was a major whaling port and ship building center making the famous ‘Whitby Colliers’. Whitby Jet, the fossilised wood of Monkey Puzzle trees became famous after Queen Victoria adopted it after the death of Prince Albert. Throughout the nineteenth century Whitby transitioned from a port to a fashionable Victorian seaside resort.
The Victorian and Edwardians built many fine houses in Whitby and we have worked on the renovations of many of these. Always popular for Victorian cornice restorations is the swan neck profile, so called because it extends further across the ceiling than it does down the wall, it was used widely across all types of property in the Victorian period. Whilst the name may be unfamiliar everyone recognises swan neck cornice when they see it. We make a number of different sizes LPC017 for example is ideal for the high ceilings of larger Victorian detached and semi detached houses, LPC030 and MPC065 for above average and average height ceilings respectively. If you need a ceiling rose a plain spun ceiling rose such as LPR074 will go well with any Victorian cornice, for a more ornate ceiling rose LPR060 is a classic Victorian design featuring acanthus leaves.
We don't just make plaster coving for older properties we have a wide range covering all ages and types of property. LPC015 is a stylish cornice not tied to any particular period, popular with customers who have above average ceiling heights, it is often chosen for new builds and more recently built properties. We have art deco designs such as MPC028, a classic three step cornice. Samples of all our coving are available off the individual product pages on the website, pages that also feature hundreds of pictures of our coving and ceiling roses in real life settings. These photographs have all been sent in by our customers and are the best way to get an impression of how a particular cornice would actually look in your own home. It is amazing just how different the same plaster cornice or ceiling rose can look depending on the style in which the room has been decorated and furnished. Samples only take a couple of days to arrive.
We would suggest you use experienced fitters to install your coving, not only will the end result be better it should also be cheaper, they will not have problems with walls that are not straight or ceilings that are not level, not to mention mitres that are not right angles or cornice with a pattern on it. These are all just normal expected parts of the job especially when working on older houses.
We have good contacts with local tradesmen and can put you in contact if required. If you have any other questions whatsoever or would like any further information or advice, please call our customer services team who have years of experience between them, they will always be happy to help you.
