Smethwick: Plaster Coving, Cornice and Ceiling Roses

We deliver plaster cornice and plaster ceiling roses to Smethwick and the surrounding area at least twice a week, so there is never longer than a few days to wait for an order. We use our own vans and drivers for deliveries to ensure our coving arrives in good condition, the drivers will check coving is handled carefully and stacked safely ready for use, this is particularly important on busy or crowded building sites where space can be short and damage can occur after delivery.

We make all our plaster coving and ceiling roses by hand, we use the same techniques and materials that were used in Victorian times. We make plaster cornice in 8 foot (2.4M) lengths each one individually moulded, all our ceiling roses are also individually made by hand. We keep large quantities of plaster coving and ceiling roses in stock so that we are able to meet even the largest orders in a matter of days rather than weeks.

Smethwick was one of the major centers of the Industrial revolution; the world's first steam engine factory, the Soho Foundry was opened in 1795 by Boulton and Watt; nearby Chance Brothers produced the glass for the Great Exhibition of 1851, Smethwick was also at the heart of the canal network. The population grew rapidly from around 1,000 in the eighteenth century to 55,000 in 1901.

Creating a building boom in the Victorian period, as new houses were needed to house the ever growing number of workers.

We have worked on the renovations of many of these Victorian properties, originally they would all have decorative plaster mouldings, that is to say, plaster cornice and plaster ceiling roses and possibly panel mouldings and corbels. It is fortunate that most of this has survived, however where it has not, we have often supplied cornice for the renovations.

Always popular for Victorian cornice restorations is swan neck coving, so called because it extends further across the ceiling than it does down the wall. The Victorians and Edwardians used different sizes of essentially the same design throughout their houses, depending on the ceiling height and the size of the room. LPC017 is one of our larger sizes of swan neck cornice and is suitable for the high ceilings of larger Victorian detached and semi detached houses, MPC065 and LPC030 are smaller and suited to average and above ceiling heights, they can also bring a Victorian feel to a more modern house.

A good choice with any Victorian cornice is a plain spun ceiling roses such as MPR073, or if you would prefer something more ornate LPR003 is an original Victorian design featuring acanthus leaves. If your style is for a more ornate cornice LPC024 is a highly decorative Victorian cornice.

We don't just make coving for older houses, we have a wide range of designs to suit all styles and types of house. LPC015 is a stylish design that looks fantastic in any house with average height ceilings and above, MPC051 and MPC046 look just as good, and are suitable for rooms where the ceiling heights are average and below. Samples of all our coving are available off the individual product pages, these pages also feature hundreds of pictures of our coving and ceiling roses in real life settings. Most of these photographs have been sent in by our customers, they are the best way to get an idea of how a cornice or ceiling rose would actually look in your own home. The same rose or cornice can look completely different depending on the style in which the room has been decorated and furnished. Samples only take a couple of days to arrive.

We suggest you use experienced fitters to install your coving, they will not have problems with ceilings that are not level or walls that are not straight, not to mention cornice with a pattern on it or corners that are not right angles. All these things are expected parts of the job especially when working on older houses where little is level or straight.  They are able to work quicker and to a higher standard so it should also work out cheaper.

We have good contacts with local tradesmen and can put you in contact. If you have any other questions or would like any further information or advice, please call our customer services team. They will always be happy to talk to you.
