Barnstaple: Plaster Coving, Cornice and Ceiling Roses
We deliver plaster coving to Barnstaple and the surrounding area roughly once a week, we have many customers in North Devon so there is never long to wait after placing an order for your coving to arrive. We use our own vans and drivers for deliveries to make sure plaster cornice and ceiling roses arrive in good condition and to ensure it stays in good condition, our drivers will check it is handled carefully and stacked safely. This is especially important on busy or crowded building sites where damage can occur.
We still make all our plaster coving and ceiling roses by hand using the same techniques & processes that were used in Victorian times, coving is cast in 2.4 meter (8 foot) lengths each ceiling rose is also individually moulded. We keep large amounts of finished coving in stock which allows us to meet even the largest orders in only a few days rather than weeks.
Barnstaple has been an important center since Saxon times, it had its own mint before the Norman conquest after which a castle was built confirming the town's defensive importance. Barnstaple flourished as a port during the medieval period trading in wool. Manufacturing industries thrived in the Victorian period when it was a center for pottery, metal working and textiles, many associated with the sea such as sail making. The wealth generated was used for a number of civic projects such as the building of the Albert Clock Tower in 1862.
This long history has given Barnstaple a fine mix of old and new properties, Plaster coving only started to become widely used in the Victorian period when manufacturing costs came down and it could be manufactured off site and brought to site in lengths as we do today, so most of our designs are from the Victorian period onwards. Our most popular Victorian design has always been swan neck cornice, so called because it extends further across the ceiling than it does down the wall. Swan neck cornice was popular throughout the Victorian period and continued to be widely used into the Edwardian era, its distinctive profile will be recognisable to anybody familiar with older houses. We have a number of different sizes of swan neck cornice to suit different ceiling heights, LPC017 will suit high Victorian ceilings which are well above the average heights of today and MPC065 will suit ceilings of average height or more modern houses, LPC030 will cover everything in between. A plain spun ceiling roses such as LPR074 will go well with any Victorian cornice or if something more ornate is what you are looking for LPR060 is a classic Victorian ceiling rose featuring Acantius leaves.
We don't just make coving for older properties, we have a complete range covering all ages and types of property, designs such as LPC015 a stylish cornice which looks good anywhere with ceilings of average height and above, it is popular for properties built from the 1920s onwards and is frequently chosen for new builds, MPC046 is just as stylish but with smaller proportions for those with lower ceilings.
Samples of all our coving are available off the individual product pages, also on these pages are hundreds of photographs of our cornice sent in by customers showing it in real life settings, these are the best way to see how a design would look in your own home, it is always surprising just how different the same cornice can look in two different rooms depending upon the style in which they have been decorated and furnished. Samples only take a couple of days to arrive.
We would suggest you use experienced cornice fitters to install your coving, not only will the end result be better it should also be cheaper. They will not have problems with ceilings that are not level or walls that are not straight, or corners that are not right angles, all these things are just part of the job. A job they will be able to do faster and to a higher standard, if you are thinking of fitting it yourself it is perfectly possible as long as you take it slowly and carefully, we have a number of instructional videos on the website.
We have good contacts with local tradesmen and can put you in contact if required. If you have any other questions or would like to talk to us about any aspect of decorative plaster, please give our customer services team a call they will be happy to talk to you.
