Restoring Period Charm with Victorian Plaster Coving

Restoring Period Charm with Victorian Plaster Coving

Location: Southampton, South East.

We have been enjoying keeping up with this customer's renovation journey on the South Coast of England.  They are currently tackling a Victorian Home renovation. We loved catching up with them to see how their coving installation went. Plaster products absolutely belong in this Victorian terrace,  this project is not just about updating the space, it's about honouring the property’s history, restoring charisma and letting architectural plaster details shine through another century.

Read along to see how our Swan Neck Plaster Coving LPC017 elevated this customer's home. This iconic design is perfect if you are wanting a classic authentic Victorian cornice for a period property, we would recommend this product for homes with higher ceilings, typically at least 2.7 meters high.

The Project: Reintroduce traditional and authentic plaster details to enhance the value and character of a mid-Victorian terrace home.

1.  How would you describe the visual impact the coving has  had on your room?

“The coving has completely transformed the room visually. It’s made the ceilings feel so much higher than before and the proportions now feel much more balanced, plus, it’s brought back that period character the room was missing before.”

Traditional detail, flawless finish. This is exactly why we are so passionate about our plaster products, coving has a beautiful way of  enhancing room proportions and lifting any space. Our LPC017 featured in this renovation has restored the period character and elegantly framed the room. We're thrilled to hear that this customer is happy with the noticeable and elevated difference.

2. Why did plaster feel like the right material compared to lightweight alternatives?

“Plaster felt like the right choice because of the level of detail and authenticity it brings. It also feels like a long-term investment: solid, durable, and far less likely to dent or age badly over time.”

We couldn’t agree more, our traditional techniques and materials allow us to achieve the most crisp details for either of our  intricate or simple designs. Gypsum plaster is a material we trust for its strength and durability that will stand the test of time, making it a real investment that adds both beauty and value to your property.

3.  How did the installation go, and what advice would you give others?

“We’re not professionals so we relied on the clear, step-by-step videos from Plaster Ceiling Roses, which made a huge difference and took a lot of the fear out of working with plaster. Once everything is filled and sanded you genuinely can’t see where one section ends and another begins, giving a really seamless finish.”

Although we would always recommend using a professional fitter to install coving and ceiling rose, we have plenty of useful fitting guides on our website as well as a helpful team of interior advisors who can happily offer technical support. We're here to help.

4.  How would you describe the difference between the room before and after installation?

"Before, the room felt quite plain and didn’t really reflect the age or character of the House. After installing the coving the room now feels characterful, complete, and much more in keeping with the period of the property."

Bringing the room’s foundations back to life, adding or restoring plaster coving adds elegance, depth and a sense of completeness. We have an extensive range of both Victorian and Edwardian designs to help you achieve true character in period properties.

5.  Would you say the plaster products were worth the investment?

“Absolutely. The durability means it feels like something that will last the lifetime of the house rather than needing to be replaced. It’s also added a real sense of authenticity, which adds to the overall value of the property.”

6.  How does the plaster contribute to the overall feel of quality in the home?

“The plaster adds a sense of quality to the whole home because of its weight and finish. It has that built-in, almost original feel, like it’s always been part of the house rather than a later addition.”

We are proud to offer something that will stand the test of time, plaster ceiling roses and coving are about adding permanent architectural details that belong to the property.

We think this customer has done a fantastic job, the coving design is the perfect choice for this ceiling height of 2.8 meters. This cornice choice make the ceiling feel higher, your eye is naturally drawn to the seamless transition from wall to ceiling plane, the room could feel hollow and cold without the impactful coving. The room now looks intentional and complete.

Other designs we recommend for homes with higher ceilings:

LPC027 - A traditional Georgian design with crisp lines that add's depth and feels luxurious

LPC080 - It's simple curve shape creates a sleek and stylish transition from wall to ceiling.

LPC021 - A classic ornate victorian design with acanthus detailing that signals a bygone era and adds total grandeur.
